Bullet Penetration: Modeling the Dynamics and the Incapacitation Resulting from Wound Trauma
- by Duncan MacPherson (2005, Second Printing)
Bullet Penetration describes the analysis and testing of a model of bullet penetration dynamics; it is a significant technical advance over what was available previously.  This penetration model is directly related to understanding the production of an incapacitating wound by the bullet parameters (velocity, weight, shape, diameter).  Incapacitation from wound trauma is a complex subject that has been controversial for many decades, and all aspects of this subject are discussed in detail.  The new results in this book are described in a style and vocabulary that make the basic principles and results understandable to the layman.  It should be read by everyone who is critically dependent on handgun bullet performance as well as all those with an interest in any aspect of wound ballistics.
The topics covered in Bullet Penetration include physiological and psychological effects in incapacitation from wound trauma, modeling of bullet penetration, and modeling of bullet expansion.  The realities associated with the desired "one shot stop" and the ignorance and/or fraud in "combat data" claims are discussed in detail.  The primary focus is on handgun ammunition, but the principles and many of the results are also applicable to rifle ammunition.  The book has 307 pages, including 69 pages of bullet photographs and graphs of test results.

Preface to the Second Printing

The number of copies of Bullet Penetration in the original December 1994 printing was based on informed opinion of persons with experience in the market for this type of technical book.  The expected decline in sales of Bullet Penetration over the years following publication did not happen and all the books in the original printing were sold by December 2002.  This result was unquestionably a result of the fact that Bullet Penetration has become widely recognized as a classic in the field.  Bullet Penetration achieved this status through favorable reviews in publications, word of mouth, and word of internet.

When the books were all sold I decided that a second printing would not be justified.  Since that time I have received many suggestions that a second printing should be done, and a couple of proposals from hustlers offering to “help” me in this activity.  Long waiting lists of those trying to buy used copies of Bullet Penetration have developed, and I eventually decided to make this second printing to satisfy the unmet demand.

This republication is called a second printing rather than a second edition to reflect the fact that the text has only relatively small changes from the first printing.  These changes include small modifications that will not be noticed by most readers and more substantive modifications (also relatively small).  The small modifications include errata and format changes:

1)   correction of minor typos that annoy me (but apparently no one else)

2)   tidying up a very few sentences for clarity and precision

3)   a different word processing program was used in formatting this printing, which introduced minor typeface changes (most obviously in some Greek letter symbols) and also makes minor changes in the page layouts even when the text has not been changed.

4)   modifying the copyright page to reflect this second printing

The more substantive changes are two additions and a modification of two pages.  The two additions to the first printing are:

1)   this Preface to the Second Printing

2)   four pages are added at the end of chapter 10 to give a more generalized method of correcting penetration test data for the effect of non-standard gelatin.  The original method applicable only to JHP bullets is retained.

The two page modification is a rewritten comment on and description of the recommended preparation of ballistic gelatin (revised pages 78 and 79).  This recommended procedure is much superior to that described in the original edition.  I have used this procedure for about 9 years with complete satisfaction, and the major ammunition manufacturers use similar procedures.
